Background
About Dr Svend Kold
Svend qualified as a veterinary surgeon in Copenhagen in 1979.
Initially enabled by a scholarship from Carlsberg, he soon made England his new home, initially for 10 years in Newmarket at the Equine Research Station. During this time, he published extensively in peer reviewed journals and wrote his Dr.Med.Vet Thesis about subchondral bone disease in horses which was publicly defended at his old University in Copenhagen in 1990.
After a sabbatical year at Colorado State University with Professor C Wayne McIlwraith, Svend decided to leave academics in 1991 and spent the next 18 years as primarily orthopaedic referral clinician and surgeon at the newly established Willesley Equine Clinic in Gloucestershire.
By 2009, Svend had built up a considerable niche as an expert witness as well as racecourse treating veterinary surgeon and equine insurance consultant in Europe and decided to go independent and collect all his activities under “one banner” of Svend Kold Ltd.
Svend’s racing interest was fostered in Copenhagen as a student and massively expanded while working in Newmarket in the 80’s. Svend has been a member of the veterinary team at Ascot Racecourse since 1985 and senior veterinary surgeon since 2000, amassing approximately 800 race days at Ascot.
More recently, he has also been included in the veterinary teams at Epsom Downs, Sandown Park and Kempton Park racecourses
